Munnabhai M.B.B.S. a bollycat of Patch Adams
Although this BollyCat is more of a love story than they original (like almost all BollyCats are), it basically follows the same plotline in the background as "Patch Adams": a young guy who wants to help people but find med. school totally overrated and inappropriate. He tries his own alternate methods to help people.
Update [6/11/05]: It has been repeatedly pointed out to me that 'Munnabahi' is an original story because it's being remade in Hollywood as 'Gangsta MD', well that's not entirely true. The movie is being made by 20th Century Fox, and directed by Mira Nair. So basically what happened here is that Mira Nair (who's a brilliant director by the way) picthed this idea to Fox as her next project, they liked it and she bought the rights from Vidhu Vinod Chopra and gave him part of the deal. The point is, none of this proves that this Bollycat isn't inspired from 'Patch Adams'. Besides there are numerous other references on the internet associating Munnabhai's obvious inspiration from 'Patch Adams'.

Hey,
In some cases u r right and in some cases u r just trying to justify ur comparing...in case of munnabhai i dont think there is any similarity. if u relate it just with medico n a guy then u can find similarity in all film which is about romance...they all have one thing common that a boy fells in love with a girl ... :
Old guy in both cases actually. But Munnabhai is funnier!
This is crap. The said movies doesn't have any similarity that can be reported as plagiarism. Please remove this. We want good entiries in this site and not fake once like this.
This is not fake. This one is real. I have seen both the films and I was baffled. These bollywood film makers are shameless. Especially Munnabhai makers should be shamed of themselves.
This is absolutely unfair to tag a great film like this as a Copy Cat. The heart of the film, which made the movie what it is, the Mumbai slang and all the comedy associated with it, can not be copied from any damn bollywood movie. Please remove this entry from your web site.
In MunnaBhai, his parents are insulted that is why he decides to be a doctor. Then ended up helping others and changing the way of hospital, but he is a BHAI. Man now i got why paki movies are failures. By The Way, have u seen paki version of MunnaBhai MBBS. That is called copying. Scene to Scene. U pakis man. u need to Grow up.
No copy here. You Pakis are shameless idiots.
The story lines are completely different. In Munnabhai, Sanjay Dutt does not "develop" the method of making patients laugh, like in Patch Adams, he just does not know any better, and just acts like what he is.
and uhh muna bhai is a gangsta and path adams is a LOSER hehe ... and circuit... ahhhh flawless character... i mean.. uhh HOTTIE
munnabhai a bollycat ? see the above link where it says that 20th century fox is buying the rights to make a movie called GANGSTER MD
please remove such false plagiarism accusations

hahaha another fake comparison.according to ur opinion every movie is a copy of some other coz every movie has a hero and a heroine and who r in love with each other.honey for ur kind info. hollywood is going to copy this movie and even the same title" gangster MD.boy just come out of mentality to call bollywood as a copycat.ur site has some true info. but such comparisons are just degrading its level.
hey!!!!!!!u ppl r so jealous of bolly movies dat ur makin unnecessary comparisons jus bcoz ur own paki movie industry is as small as vatican city........if u hv 2 make comparisons go chck out ur own paki movies who try 2 copy every second bolly movie.....plz remember this suggestion..
There is a huge difference between being inspired from something and copying something. All of us are constantly inspired from something; theoretically this website is plagarized because there are tons of concepts like this.
are u'll mad or what ...have u see patch adams????????????
the only similarity is that both are wannabe doctors....and munna doesnt "heart feltly" wanna be one.....whereas Patch Adams is the story of the evolution of a man trying to find himself..and who finds the purpose of his life living against all odds........except for the docotr part please enlighten me with more matches in the storyline!!!!!
mbbs has the same plotline as patch adams both persons doesn't like the medical system and tries their own way healing a patient...and love story...bollywood just added one so it can be a bollywood movie...a bolly wood movie without a love story is impossible to be a bollywood movie...stop being ignorant indians and accept the fact...and why are you hating on pakis so much...ignorance is bliss
Mark Antony is spot on! There are quite a few movies that Bollywood has made that can be called frame to frame copies of their original and there are quite a few that have worked on a "Concept" (if you all understand what a concept means) adopted in A movie and a lot of movies listed on this site are crap. A copy falunted as an original definitely needs to be caned but it is an utter disgust to see good movies with original storylines listed here. I feel this site is probably an excellent example of a good "Concept" gone sour. A bad copy which fails.
You Fuckin Pakistanis have to come off age and look at starts not gutter.....stop these nonsense and think of the reality....who copies who....u dont have to really bother....just see to it that what ur country is doing ... all bullshit
HELL YEAH... I SAW BOTH MOVIES... BOLLYWOOD STILL SUCKS!
settle down !
The person explains how its not an exact rip-off.
I also thought of PatchAdams when I saw Munnabhai. Its interesting that someone else did too.
You could say its more of an inspiration than a copy.
But thats when you compare it to the rest of the hindi movies.
The whole movie is carried forward in the same way PatchAdams was. So there was a copy at some level. Probably the screenplay and dialogues were innovative. But the initial story wasn't.
So get over it. This does deserve a mention on this great site. :)

What ever you do is a copy, because your actions are inspired by your surrounding.
If you put a child in a closed room till he is adult, do you expect him to be "intelligent", "creative" etc. No right, because he never got any inputs on which he could learn and proceed. So now would you call every person in this world a Copy as every person is learning and beign inspired and influenced by his surroundings?
Website author wrote: "... 'Munnabahi' is an original story because it's being remade in Hollywood as 'Gangsta MD', ..."
Do not play with words. Munnabai is original not because it is being remade in Hollywood... it is original for other reasons. Obviously you haven't seen either so stop making stupid comparisons.
Hats off to hollywood
Bollywood really sux...u asshole bollywood director think something new..don;t copy...grow up
Wow...next thing you know, you guys are going to start saying that Lage Raho Munna Bhai is a copy of some Hollywood movie based on the great life of Dr. King...even though the wonderful Dr. King was also inspired by Gandhi-ji himself. It's sad that some of your entries are so far-fetched that they make you look like racist, boot-liking caucasian lovers. So, let's see...exactly how many Hollywood movies are "ripoffs" or "inspired copies" of highly popular foreign films??? hmmm...The Lake House (Hollywood 2006) aka II Mare (Korea 2000) or My Sassy Girl (Hollywood 2008) vs My Sassy Girl (exact same name as the 2001 Korean movie with distinctly identical plot lines)...just to name a few.
Look when a brilliant idea is born it fetches you huge money and parallely you copy that and get a handful of money...so i find no issue in copying films...If there were no copying all Indian viewers would have to watch cultural movies only!!!!!
I've seen Patch Adams..
Munna Bhai is copied of "Patch Adams"
bollywood always copy, it's like they never find their own stories.. like wha da heck?
and for all u people talking about hollywood making same movie... well u should know the person who is making is an INDIAN !! so again its and indian person making it.. it would of been a different story if american person was doing it.. so SHUT UP!
every single bollywood movie is copied (inspired) by HOLLYWOOD !! .. if u dont believe this den u're jus a FOB lol..
The plot is lifted for sure
1) Patch does not like the idea of patients filling the form while being admitted and it is also shown in munna bhai
2) Patch does not like patients being referred as patients and he calls them by theire names ,and same is shown in munna bhai
3) Patch feels doctors should have human emotions and same is showed in munna bhai
4) There are scenes where the dean of college gives a lecture to the students on how to be doctors and it is exactly copied in munna bhai
5) There is a scene where patch adams is on a trial and same is showed in munna bhai
Over all the plot is lifted and all the fake directors of bollywood have done is mixed some cheap humour suited for Indians and dished out the movie..cheap Indians..SADLY AM AN INDIAN

it is a remarkable work of remake of "Back to school" starring Rodney Dangerfield.
Munna Bhai MBBS is also an inspiration from the movie - "One Flew from the Cukoo's Nest"...though this one is a Slow Drama..Rajkumar Hirani was smart enough to manage....the characters are purely inspired...there is no way to conclude this one is a original story...!!! Haven't
All those people hurt by this post is either because
1. They loved the movie too much to accept its inspired..
or
2. They haven't seen Patch Adams..
or
3. Even if they have, they are dumb enough to not observe the similarity..
Of course it is similar to Patch Adams conceptually, the guy wants to bring change in the hospital, tries more humane methods for treatment and the wardens in both are so similar in hating and trying to stop the protagonist..
But the humor in MunnaBhai was so original and exceptional that you can easily overlook the film-makers (little) picking up of the concept.. Vidhu VInod has given quite a few brilliant movies and Hirani has proved himself again with Lage Raho .. Hence I dont take anything away from any of both ..
Not to forget the exceptional performances from not only Sanjay Dutt and Warsi but almost the entire cast..
Bottom-line : I will buy it without complain ..
but its just my POV
Well, Munnabhai is certainly inspired by Patch Adams. But they have made enough changes to the plot, so calling it a rip off is too much.
I loved Patch Adams. Robin Williams is any day the funniest guy on the planet. Munnabhai was just inspired by the movie. (I know many directors and storywriters say their story was merely 'inspired', but they blatantly rip off the movie. But this is truly an 'inspiration'...)
It deserves a mention, sure. But there should be some way of classifying such instances in bollycat, and not club this along the same lines as the other blatant rip offs.
I agree to the comments of "copied'. Though I am an Indian - I rarely see one single Indian that has not been a mix of various bits 'n pieces of several holly wood movies. why bits and pieces - because Hindi movies (all Indian movies are!) are 3- 4 hrs long and they need 2 to 3 english movies to copy from. This is really bad...when I see Bollywood actors and actress acting these aped (raped) movies and at the same time act as if they show the greatness of India. I vomit....
shucks....if we do not have a truly romantic life why try copying from hollywood.
