Lagaan a bollycat of Victory

| | Comments (19)

Lagaan [2001]Ok, before you start flaming this entry like some have done to "Black", let me say that "Lagaan" was a great movie and it really deserved the Oscar nod. And, we believe that Aamir Khan is one of the most talented people in Bollywood. But...

Victory [1981]Kashif writes that Lagaan has the "same story and same feel of Sly Stallone movie 'Victory'." Both follow a match between two sides: the oppressors and the oppressed. "Lagaan" follows a cricket match and how the local Indian villagers learn to play a totally foreign sport while in "Victory" French POWs scheme to escape from an Axis prison using their Soccer match with a Naxi team as a cover. Pankaz notes that Lagaan is "very highly inspired, with added masala of cricket."

Thanks also to Aasavari Gokhale and Raj Singh for telling us that "even the ending is similar".

What a load of crap! There are many hollywood movies where the game redeems the characters - that is a very basic idea - it's like saying that all movies where two estranged lovers come together in the end are copies of one another.. or that all movies where a serial killer is caught are copies...

dude, you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel in trying to convince people that some movies are copies of hollywood ones. In doing so, you are diluting the effect of the whole site by making yourself sound less than credible.

Rule of thumb: Having the same theme does not make a movie a copy... having the same storyline and plot twists makes a movie a copy.

Request: do enable html in the comments, and also convert newlines to line breaks. Else the comments look really f**ked up.

There used to be a serial called Nukkad which used to appear in doordarshan in the 80s. I remember an episode in which the ppl living in the Nukkad/basti had to play a cricket match to save their basti. It had many scenes similar to the ones in Lagaan including a nail biting last ball climax. I dont know if Asutosh gowariker worked in Nukkad but i do know he acted in the serial Circus starring Shahrukh khan and made by the same team which made Nukkad. So there is a possiblity he watched that episode of Nukkad and probably got the inspiration for lagaan.

LAGAAN MUST BE A COPY.. HAS TO BE... ITS AFTERALL A BOLLYWOOD FILM. LOL

This seems rather far-fetched. As mentioned by someone else above, the cricket match idea isn't quite new and playing a game where there are high stakes is not new either.

You guys are trying toooo hard. 'tis far fetched-chill back.

Hats off to the comments... I went through various reviews. More than anything, this website is just trying to bring in 2 pieces and attempting to make the visitors believe that the pieces are identical. Movie making is an art. It is very important to differentiate between plagiarism and inspiration. This site seems to lack in doing so.

lagaan was brilliant but that doea not mean it cannot be copied or 'inspired' or whatever you want to call it

You said it. Thats the attitude overall hindi movies are getting due to most of the copied movies. The few originals get hard time proving them self.
I guess we have over come the level of the bollywood's viewer. I was a die hard hindi movie fan when i was a kid, unknown from hollywood and its remakes. So hey, the average indians also deserve the hollywood flicks in desi way!
I say simply don't watch bollywood movies unless they make some splashes in the news.... haha.

oh please...that's a huge stretch.

I think that although they may have similar story lines, Lagaan had a totally different delivery. Bollywood films are meant to entertain, and I think they do that better than most Hollywood films. I have more fun watching Bollywood films.

Alrite. I think it was rip off Mystery, Alaska! Movie idea is very similar--however desi movies cannot have sad ending 90% of times! Agreed Lagaan Screenplay is original--but story is indeed an inspiration and no doubt!

The gori who falls in love with the local dude who falls in love with a village girl in Lagaan's central plot is taken from the Tamil movie "Nadodi Thendral" starring Karthik written and directed by Bharathi Raja.

i think this ones original for the most part, or as original as any movie, all are goiing to have some inspiration back to the beginning of theatre. This one was nominated for an international oscar, that speaks volumes...

Shravan said:

The nutcase who says that Lagaan is a copy is a fool.Lagaan went on to the Oscars. Is Mr Kashif even worth a penny compared to the oscar jury.Do you think the jury nominated this movie just like that.

Kashif btw Victory is really a stupid movie.Wanna get trained on Movies go watch a Stanley Kubrick or Martin Scorese.Improves our intelligence and gets you out of your little ignorant world.

Whats the fuss about copying movies.
When Indian Idol,KBC n numerous dance competetions are just replicated,every1 seems to enjoy(n vote too!).
Indians can make movies based on their culture and history but the public wont like it.
How a true story "Mangal Pandey" got wrecked in Box Office coz that showed the arrogance of an uneducated Indian Sepoy!!!
So please stop this fuss...start enjoyin movies rather than making comparisions.
